Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Plain answers to the questions we hear most often about IoT SIM cards, multi-network coverage, failover, pricing, and compatible devices.
What is Sturdy SIM?
Sturdy SIM is a data-only SIM card for connected devices. A single SIM can connect to more than 200 cellular networks, in the United States and around the world, for one flat price.
What is an IoT SIM?
IoT stands for the Internet of Things. An IoT SIM is a SIM card made for equipment and not for a person's phone: routers, trackers, sensors, payment terminals, cameras, and similar devices. It carries data, is intended for unattended use, and is managed as part of a deployment of many devices.
How is a multi-network SIM different from an ordinary SIM?
An ordinary SIM belongs to one carrier and can only use that carrier's network. A multi-network SIM is permitted on many networks. A Sturdy SIM can use more than 200, so a device connects wherever at least one of them has coverage.
What happens if the network my device is using goes down?
Because a Sturdy SIM is permitted on more than 200 networks, the device can register on another network that is in range. How quickly it does so depends on the modem in the device and how it is configured.
Is connectivity guaranteed?
Yes. Because a Sturdy SIM draws on multiple carriers and does not depend on any one of them, we guarantee 100% reliable connectivity.
What SIM sizes are available?
Every SIM size is available: standard (2FF), micro (3FF), nano (4FF), and embedded (MFF2).
Does Sturdy SIM support 5G and LTE-M?
Yes. Sturdy SIM supports 5G and LTE-M, as well as standard LTE. Which one a device uses is determined by its modem.
Does Sturdy SIM include voice calling?
No. Sturdy SIM is for data use only. It does not provide voice service and is not a replacement for a mobile phone plan.
Can I use a Sturdy SIM in a mobile phone or tablet?
Sturdy SIM is made for connected devices such as routers, trackers, sensors, and terminals. It is a data-only service and is not intended to replace a consumer phone plan.
What devices does it work with?
It is designed for unlocked cellular devices that use data. These include LTE routers and gateways, vehicle and asset trackers, payment terminals, kiosks, digital signs, cameras, and remote sensors. Tell us the make and model of your device and we will confirm that it is a good fit.
Where does Sturdy SIM work?
It works nationwide in the United States across the major cellular networks, and it roams on carrier networks around the world. Tell us where your devices will operate and we will confirm the coverage available there.
How much does it cost?
Sturdy SIM is sold at one flat price, with no separate rate for each network. The price for your deployment depends on the number of SIMs and the amount of data your devices use. Call 213-337-6222 or request a quote.
Do I pay more when my device connects to a different network?
No. The price is the same whichever network the device uses.
What is the difference between steered and non-steered roaming?
A steered SIM is directed by its provider to prefer particular networks, usually the ones that cost the provider least, even where another network has a stronger signal. A non-steered SIM leaves the device free to use the best network available. It is a useful question to ask of any multi-network SIM.
What is an eSIM or eUICC, and how does it differ from a roaming SIM?
An eUICC, often called an eSIM, is a SIM that can hold more than one carrier profile and have profiles changed remotely. A roaming SIM uses one profile that is accepted by many networks. Both are ways of freeing a device from a single carrier. We can discuss which approach suits your deployment.
What is the difference between LTE, LTE-M, and NB-IoT?
LTE is the standard fourth-generation data service used by routers, cameras, and other devices that need speed. LTE-M and NB-IoT are low-power variations made for small, battery-powered devices that send little data. Sturdy SIM supports 5G, LTE, and LTE-M. Which one a device uses is determined by its modem, so please tell us what your hardware supports.
My older device used 3G. Will it work?
The major carriers in the United States retired their 3G networks during 2022, so a device that supports only 2G or 3G will generally need to be replaced with one that supports LTE. We can help you check what your equipment supports.
How much data will my device use?
It varies widely. A sensor that sends a few readings an hour uses very little, while a camera that streams video uses a great deal. Tell us what your device does and how often it reports, and we will help you estimate.
Can I try a SIM before placing a large order?
Yes, and we recommend it. Testing in your own hardware at representative locations is the most reliable way to confirm coverage and performance before a rollout.
